A unique piece of rowing and New Zealand sporting history is up for grabs after the double world champion Kiwi pair of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray decided to auction off their world famous Faceboat flag on TradeMe.
The flag was carried by the boys in every international final they have raced over the past two years, when they have remained unbeaten. Those races include all World Cup finals in 2009 and 2010, two Henley Royal Regatta finals and most importantly, in two World Championship final that include the most recent spectacular race against their British rivals Andrew Triggs Hodge and Peter Reed at Lake Karapiro.
The flag was originally designed by the boys to be part of a fund raising exercise, with sponsors and supporters able to buy a space on the flag and 'be on board' with the crew. The supporters also got their picture on the boys' training boat, which covered thousands of kilometres in training over the past two years.
Along with the flag, Hamish and Eric will also include one of the yellow FISA World Cup series leader jerseys, signed by both of them, a letter of authenticity also signed and some signed posters, as well as time sheets from some of the big regattas.
"The flag became part of our routine and it's obviously been with us in some of those huge races. It'll be sad to see it go but it is for a good cause," explained Eric. The boys plan to donate the proceeds to the adaptive rowing side of the sport if the auction proves a hit. Adaptive rower Danny McBride was the first Kiwi athlete to medal at this year's world championships and adaptive rowing is a developing area of the sport in New Zealand with the appeal of classes at the Paralympic Games as well as the world championships.
