USRowing is pleased to recognize Letcher Ross as this year’s recipient of the Julian Wolf Award.
Chosen by the five past Julian Wolf winners, the award honors one rowing official in the United States that stood apart in making contributions to the sport in the past year. Selection is based upon outstanding performance, dedication, heroic acts and/or outstanding contributions to officiating.
“It's a truly unexpected honor to receive this award,” said Ross. “I had the opportunity to work with Julian Wolf in Hawaii in the mid-90s at the Royal Hawaiian Rowing Challenge. He was a remarkable individual and I am flattered to be given an award in his name.
“Refereeing lets me give back to our community, and I am always learning something new from the talented team of people I work with. In many ways, this award reflects back on all the referees I have had the privilege of working with who have helped shape my officiating career.“
Ross got his start in the rowing world by supporting his son's participation in the junior program at Seattle's Mount Baker Crew. This led him to recreational rowing at Green Lake, where, during his short, two-race competitive career. A veteran referee, Letcher has participated in regattas throughout the United States and western Canada in his more than 15 years of officiating. Most recently, he served as deputy chief at the 2013 USRowing Youth National Championships, and as chief at the 2013 USRowing Northeast Junior Regional Championships and the 2013 Covered Bridge Regatta.
"Letcher has served as both chief and deputy for several USRowing championship events,” said John Wik, USRowing Director of Referee Programs. “He demonstrates a complete understanding of the Rules of Rowing, applying them consistently and fairly in all situations."
The award is named in honor of the late Julian Wolf, the founder and coach of the University of Southern California crew team, member and chairman of the United States Olympic Rowing Committee from 1971 to 1988, manager of the 1984 men’s Olympic team and founder and director of the USRowing Referee College. Wolf was inducted into the USRowing Hall of Fame in 1989.
Ross will be recognized on December 6 at the 2013 USRowing Annual Convention in Seattle, Wash. Click here for more information.
