Dartmouth College men's head coach and two-time Olympic medalist Wyatt Allen has been tapped to coach the U.S. under 23 men's team that will compete at the 2016 World Rowing Junior, Under 23 and Senior Championships.
The regatta, scheduled for Aug. 21-28 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, is a combination of junior, under 23 and senior world championship events.
A nine-time national team athlete who won gold in the men's eight at the 2004 Olympic Games and bronze in 2008, Allen served as assistant coach for the 2014 and 2015 U.S. under 23 team and led the men's four to a sixth-place finish at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships and to a fourth-place finish in 2015.
Allen will be assisted by Cornell University men's lightweight coach, Chris Kerber.
"I'm excited to be back coaching with the U23 national team this summer, and to be working with what should be a very talented and accomplished group of athletes," Allen said. "I'm also looking forward to working with Chris Kerber. He's clearly one of the best coaches around so it'll be fun to collaborate with him on the eight and straight four."
Allen started his coaching career at the University of Washington before taking over as the freshmen coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of California Berkeley in 2009. In 2011, Allen led the California freshmen eight to an undefeated season that included an IRA Championship and a victory in the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
He was named head coach of the heavyweight men's team at Dartmouth in 2014.
Kerber's 2015 squad went undefeated, earning the inaugural Ivy League Coach of the Year award, as well as repeating as the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Lightweight Coach of the Year.
Allen and Kerber will select and coach the men's under 23 crews competing in Rotterdam.
Kerber, a seven-time national team athlete, was named the Henry E. Bartels '48 Head Coach of Men's Lightweight Rowing at Cornell University in 2008 and he has helped Cornell to a pair of national championships. His 2015 squad went undefeated, earning him the inaugural Ivy League Coach of the Year award, as well as repeating as the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges Lightweight Coach of the Year.
"I am honored to be considered for the position," Kerber said. "I look forward to working with these young athletes as they take the next step to develop and race for the USA. I am excited to work along side Wyatt Allen and within the strong leadership at USRowing."
