Rowing Canada VP Challenges Women to Indoor Race
Mounds of snow, sleet or freezing temperatures are not keeping Rowing Canada Aviron's VP High Performance, Phil Monckton, from training on his rowing machine (ergometer), and this year he has extra incentive to keep in top shape.
Monckton has challenged current and potential National Team heavyweight women at this Sunday's Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ont. to beat his 2000-metre time and win cash!
"Aside from my own goal of staying fit, I am challenging Canada's women to beat me on the ergometer over 2000 metres," said Monckton, 56, who was also leader of the Olympic rowing team that picked up four medals in Beijing this summer. "We need to see these women on the podium in 2012 and this is a lighthearted but competitive push to help them get there."
Phil Monckton was a member of Canada's National Rowing team from 1974 to 1984, and picked up an Olympic bronze medal as part of the quad in 1984. He also set the world record in his age category on the ergometer in 1993. Phil is currently serving on Rowing Canada's Executive Committee of as Vice President, High Performance.
Monckton will be among the approximately 800 participants in this annual event. See below for other upcoming indoor events.
