    • Updated extensively at 9:45 AM The a list of names of members of the rowing community that are confirmed safe; if you would like me to include your name or the name of friends of yours, please send them to me at row2k.com. The list now includes Chris Fenyo, a NYFD BU alum and former Princeton intern coach who had been included on a list of the missing published on Thursday on bloomberg.com and elsewhere. Jon Brown tracked Chris down and confirmed that he is working on the cleanup in NYC. As we noted when we established the list, we will continue to be circumspect and to confirm absolutely all news and rumors before posting, thanks for everyone's cooperation and assistance in this effort. Although we have not heard of any immediate members of the rowing community who are hurt or lost, we do know of some rowing folks have lost family and friends. Our hearts go out to them and everyone impacted by these events.

    • Updated extensively at 4:35 PM Folks - several people have written me requesting that we establish a message or posting board to inform the rowing world about the safety of folks working in New York and Washington DC, or potentially flying on any of the planes involved. We've considered several different ways to do this that would not instigate rumors that might be hurtful to the families and friends of anyone involved. As a result, I am compiling a list of names of members of the rowing community that are confirmed safe; if you would like me to include your name or the name of friends of yours, please send them to me at row2k.com.
    • The Irish Amateur Rowing Union is closing its doors today "out of respect to all the people who perished in the World Trade Centre catastrophe on Tuesday and as an indication of our solidarity with members of the rowing community in the United States." • Updated 8:30 PM with NYAC roster - all good news so far, as the AC might have been expected to be hard hit Folks - several people have written me requesting that we establish a message or posting board to inform the rowing world about the safety of folks working in New York and Washington DC, or potentially flying on any of the planes involved.
    • Jason Read, stroke of the US men's eight, has been in NYC for the past 40 hours working on the search for survivors, and asked that we link the American Red Cross and to "encourage anyone with the means to donate. They have helped all the rescuers and victims out tremendously." If that site is inaccessible, another way to donate: Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Thus far, we have no reliable reports of members of the immediate rowing community lost in the disasters, although friends and family of many have been affected. We are deeply saddened by these events, and our hearts go out to everyone touched by the disaster.

    • Day 8 - FINALS: Heartache at Penrith, row2k's Finals report
    • Olympic tidbits:
      • Andris Reinholds, M1x from Latvia, tested positive for nandrolone in in-competition testing during the Games. No announcement to this effect has been made yet, but FISA rules dictate a lifetime ban for the first offense. He placed second in the B final, eighth overall.
      • The photo finish of the women's single final was protested on Sunday, as the Bulgarians made the case that while the finish line technology allows for extremely close scrutiny of a photo finish, there is no similar technology at the starting line guaranteeing perfect alignment. While many conceded the argument carried some truth, there is no procedure for review of a protest the day after the racing, and the protest was denied.
    • Games Firsts and Streaks:
      • The Slovenian double won that country's first-ever gold medal in any sport.
      • Drought of 48 years ends with two golds: The French men's pair won France's first gold since 1952; the lightweight men's four added to the gold tally the following day.
      • The Polish lightweight men's double took Poland's first ever gold medal in rowing.
      • The British eight won their first gold medal in the event since 1912.
      • Redgrave won his fifth straight gold medal.
      • Elisabeta Lipa gold in the eight was her seventh Olympic medal, the most for any rower in history. Four have been gold, two silver, and one bronze.
      • Christine Collins' bronze medal is her 7th world championship or Olympic medal, more than any other female rower in US history.
    • Lost & Found: Dave Gabel is trying to locate the owner of a pair of Dreher sculls that found their way on to his trailer at master's nationals (now in Boston). He has contacted Dreher with the serial # but, they were unable to look up the owner. Dave can be contacted at (617)388-8654 and will return the oars with a proper description or serial # i.d.

A FEDERAL APPEALS-COURT PANEL has dismissed a lawsuit brought by former men's soccer players and wrestlers against Illinois State University after it dropped their sports. Male athletes whose sports have been discontinued cannot sue a university under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, according to this month's ruling.

"Holding that universities cannot achieve substantial proportionality by cutting men's programs is tantamount to a requirement that universities achieve substantial proportionality through additional spending to add women's sports programs," wrote Judge Joel M. Flaum in the unanimous opinion. "This result would ignore the financial and budgetary constraints that universities face."

    • From Sean Mulligan (UW and US LW8+ cox), the straight dope on the giant oarsman in last week's SI:
        Hi Ed,
I saw the thing from Mary Kramer about Todd. He is now rowing with us (7footer) and currently is pulling about 5:34 for 2k. And he is Canadian!!
Really though, he plays bball for us and used to be a paddler, but there are no kayak paddles in the boathouse so they used a sculling blade.
Thought someone out there might want the full story.
