“I’m going to tell you a story
I’m going to tell you about my town...”
The Indian name for the Charles River was ‘ Quinobequin ‘ meaning meandering. Capt. John Smith named the Charles River after Charles I of England to interest the monarchy in potential trade and settlement opportunities. The river, with connection to the Atlantic Ocean, provided a water highway to the interior.
“ Well I love that dirty water...” Without strong current and force, the slow moving Charles River will always be brownish in color no matter how clean it becomes. River water steeps like tea through abundant wetlands along it’s winding path.
Today the EPA – New England has launched an ambitious effort to restore the river so that it is fishable and swimmable by EarthDay 2005. On May 2, 2003, EPA graded the river’s water quality as a “B”, the same grade as last year but a dramatic improvement from the “D” they gave the river seven years ago. – source CWRA
