Overheard Saturday:
A, watching an international crew row past: They're a long way from home
B: A long way from winning, too.
During warmup in the basin, while rowing: "That cloud looks like a salmon with its mouth open."
Penalty Box Penalties got the best of both singles "winners" today, as Rumyana Neykova posted the fastest time by four seconds over Kristin Goodrich today, and Kent Smack led the single scullers, but both were assessed violations in the official results that cost them the gold medal.
The club eight was markedly short on gag costumes, although the MIT alums promised the goods, and delivered, as shown in today's HOCR cover shot.
Time Zone Margin
The biggest margin of the day had to be in the Masters 2x, where Michael Smith and Dan Gorriaran, 3.62% ahead of the nearest competitor. As a result, only the top two crews get guaranteed entries for next year under the HOCR 5% rule.
The largest penalty of the day: 2 minutes for the DC Strokes women's Club four, as well as for the Row As One Institute, Inc Senior Master Eights +50
Crash-up Derby
In the Club Four, we saw what may have been the most disastrous chain of events following on a relatively routine clash in our long history of staring at the Charles River in mid-late October. I'll have the evidence in the morning in our photo galleries. The carnage resulted in a 1:20 penalty for the Duke men.
