The Gorge Waterway is becoming a favored course for UBC having won on
it in each of the last 5 meetings with UVic between the Head of the
Gorge and Brown Cup races. The 17th Annual Brown Cup Boat Race got
underway under rainy skies late Saturday morning, UBC's varsity men's
8+ got off to a solid start taking a half boat lead in the first minute.
Ever present, UVic managed to almost draw back to even as they got
their first significant advantage prior to the trestle turn but UBC
held their composure knowing their advantage was yet to come. Coming
through the big turn 1st year coxswain Ronan Sabo Walsh was flawless on
the lines making the most of UBC's advantage, Sabo Walsh was warned by
the following official, former 60's T-Bird Wayne Van Osterhout on two
occasions for pressing into UVic water he but stayed on the fair side
of aggressive throughout the race. A well fought race by both crews had
UBC finish with half a boat length open water in 8:31.57 to the Vikes
8:37.75. The race brings the historical Brown Cup standings to 14 wins
to the Vikes, 3 to the T-Birds who have now won the cup in 3 of the last 4 meetings.
UBCs 8+: Coxswain - Ronan Sabo-Walsh, Stroke - Kevin Devlin, 7 - Mitch
Wilson, 6 - Andrew Knorr, 5 - Miles Foran, 4 - Mike Stewart, 3 - Graham
Harris, 2 - Tim Love, Bow - Gord Clark
In the women's race, it looked like UBC would finally shake the UVic
monkey off their backs, snapping the Vikes 15 year unbeaten hold on the
Brown Cup. Given UBC's dominant 2- racing at the Elk Lake Spring
Sprints at the beginning of March, all indications were that it was to
be UBC's year. Coming into the trestle turn at the half way mark UBC
held a commanding 1 and half length open water lead but at the critical
turn UBC's coxswain misjudged the correct line, missing the set up turn
and driving the 8+ straight for the bridge. Stroke Tanya Landrandatha
threw in her oar in an attempt to force the boat back on course but it
was too late, the Vikes caught the T-Birds as they awkwardly maneuvered
around the bridge abutment. The error cost the T-Birds over fourty
seconds which could not be reclaimed. The Vikes when on to win in
9:48.22 to UBC's 10:20.81
UBC 8+: Coxswain - Judah Chen, Stroke - Tanya
Landrandatha, 7 - Audra Vair, 6 - Nathalie Maurer, 5 - Melissa Cory, 4 -
Caitlin McKay, 3 - Andrea Bundon, 2 - Jacqueline Thygesen, Bow - Aiden
Sisler
In other races:
In the Race for the Reserves, UBC junior varsity looking for a repeat of their win over the Vikes at the Elk Lake Spring Sprints were put on their heels early by the higher rating Vikes finishing two lengths down.
The UBC novice women also finished their season in winning fashion,
with two wins over the Vikes in 2km duel action on Elk Lake.
