Rich celebrates before heading into the drink

In an eight, sure. In a quad, double, four, maybe even in a pair; but you might want to think twice about punching the air with both hands in celebration in a single. At least that's likely what Rich Montgomery will tell you after this morning's third and decisive final, which Rich won by just under a length over Andy Liverman; Rich wins the right to represent the US in the light men's single in Banyoles July 27-August 1.

I'll let the photos show the story, but in short: Rich flipped his single celebrating his win.

No mercy moment of the morning: when Rich finally surfaced (he was under for a good few seconds) and got an arm over the hull, Rich's Dad yelled to him "Rich - learn to row!" Other comments from the shore: "Rich, it's left over right; that's it," and "maybe try keeping both hands on the oars."

From the finish line, it looked like Andy led for most of the race, but probably by closed water only; and in the final 250 meters Rich pulled even and then through; it was an almost exact repeat of yesterday's race.

Both of today's third finals went to the winner of the second final; in the women's light single, Sarah Hirst won a decisive victory over Rachel Anderson to be named the women's single for Worlds. Both Sarah and Rich covered the time standard over the course of the weekend, and are named to the Worlds team.

Later in the morning, the PACRA coxed pair of DeFelice, Schmunk and Puma made the time standard by a gnat's egg, making it a full Worlds team for Banyoles.
