Santa Claus is rowin' to town

Since our deadline for this article is Black Friday, what more appropriate time to write about holiday gifts for your favorite rower! Many of these suggestions are personal preferences and certainly don’t include all options but will give you lots of ideas and hopefully you’ll find it helpful. Happy Holidays!

Rowing Clothes:

  • Trou - JL are the go-to choice (www.jlrowing.com).
  • Long sleeve - We love our tech shirts from JL.
  • Jacket - Boathouse Sports has great rowing jackets including Gore-tex.
  • Tights - I've been very happy with my Under Armour tights.
  • Vest - Cold, windy days mean never going out without your turtle vest from JL
  • Pogies - Again, on cold mornings, pogies make a frosty day much more comfortable, you can find the Sew Sporty pogies here.
  • Gloves - The Crew Stop has made a glove designed specifically for rowing.
  • Hats - Rowing is a very hat-friendly sport, but last year we discovered Headsweats and found it does a really good job of keeping the sweat from dripping into my eyes.
  • Customized team gear - find out where your favorite rower’s team gets their gear and buy some items from them with the team logo, they’ll probably have everything from t-shirts to hats to jackets.

Books:
So many to choose from and as you look for these, we're sure you’ll find others. All can be found at www.amazon.com.

Electronics:

Oars:
Concept 2 has always been the standard, but many people also like Croker oars or Dreher carbon sculls and sweeps.

Boats:
Too many options to list but also a very personal decision so better to consult your favorite rower before buying

Ergometer:
More options available now but the one that’s used by almost every high school, college and National Training Center is the Concept 2 erg.

Rowing Camp:
Several popular options are Calm Waters Rowing, also Craftsbury Sculling and Florida Rowing Center. Many more resources for youth, competitive and masters camps can be found in the row2k Camps section.

Tools:
Always good to be ready to make rigging changes but to assure your favorite rower knows what they’re doing, you might want to start out with The Nuts and Bolts of Rigging by Mike Davenport.

You can accompany that with the tools of the trade, a pitch meter from Durham Boat Company and various wrenches - an adjustable, a 3/4 inch, a 7/16 and 10 mm, a flat head and phillips head screw driver and a set of allen wrenches. That will get you through most rigging issues.

Odds & Ends:

And remember...Santa Claus is a rower!
