If you have spent any amount of time at a boathouse, you have probably come across at least one boathouse dog. They can be seen riding along in a launch or keeping the geese off of the docks or simply taking a nap while you erg. Back in 2009 row2k featured a photo poll of boathouse dogs. It has been a few years and now it is time for the next generation of boathouse dogs to work their way into the spotlight.
Based on the following criteria, the fifteen club finalist are listed below with the poll at the bottom of the page:
• Photo of the Dog (preferably at the boathouse)
• Dog's Name
• Boathouse/Club Affiliation
• Short description of why your boathouse dog is the best.
The 2015 favorite collegiate boathouse dog winner is Stevie Bones from Atlanta Rowing Club! The complete results can be found below.
Bambi | |
Narragansett Boat Club |
"Bambi" is a one year old English Cocker Spaniel, who affectionately greets every Narragansett Boat Club member that he meets. Here he is with NBC rower, coach and boatman, Dr. Amy Abbot, one of his biggest fans, and she his. |
| Delilah |
Community Rowing, Inc. |
This is Delilah, KateLynne Steinke's service dog. In harness she helps KateLynne with different tasks such as picking up objects off the ground, and pushing the handicap button on the door. Outside of her harness she is a fantastic wrestler and loves playing fetch in the field next to Community Rowing, Inc. |
Fireball | |
Los Gatos Rowing Club |
The intensity of Fireball's name is only matched by his enthusiasm for rowing. Whether it is leading the pack on a team run, boosting team morale with belly rubs and tail wags, protecting the recently cleaned dock from geese or coaching with a patient eye from the launch, Fireball does it all. |
|
Guinness & Blake |
Stone Bridge High School |
We don't have a boathouse but we have two labs that love to go to practice Guinness and Blake. Blake is watching timing while Guinness is wondering when it is time to swim. |
Jake |
|
Princeton National Rowing Association |
Jake is the quintessential boathouse dog. From helping lightweights with the weigh-ins, offering to assist National Team athletes and coaches in post work out snacking to adding his support during workouts, Jake supports all aspects of the boathouse. He has taken it as his personal mission to keep the docks bird and snake free so that rowers can enjoy their sport without these nasty interferences. He will even dive off a launch at full speed to chase the geese from the course. From his first visit to the boathouse with his mother (Kona) at 5 weeks, Jake has been a boathouse dog for over 6 years supporting all rowers from novice to Olympian including juniors and masters. It is a job he takes seriously and he seeks your support in this Favorite Boathouse Dog poll. |
Jasmine |
|
Evans Rowing Club |
Jasmine has been going to the boathouse and team practices since she was 4 months old. She is now 13 and has truly spent her entire life involved in the sport of rowing. She loves nothing more than having her life jacket put on, riding in the coaching launch, and jumping in the water. |
| Jax |
Texas Rowing Center |
This is my dog/assistant coach Jax. We coach out of the Texas Rowing Center in Austin, TX. After coaching here for 4 years, Jax has become the unofficial mascot of the boathouse. I am always greeted second to him by all rowers and members. He can put a smile on anyone's face, he rides the launch like he was born for it, and he diligently protects the dock from the "evil" ducks and swans. TRC would not be the same without him. |
Jill | |
Vesper Boat Club |
She can be found chasing off geese, cleaning up water bottles, raising morale, keeping standards high by remaining perpetually unimpressed by most rowing she sees, and occasionally comendeering the launch from Sean Clarke. |
|
Judah |
Newport Rowing Club |
Judah spends roughly 87% of his awake time at the boathouse gnawing on old boat shoes, "helping" the rowers with their circuit workouts, and welcoming the athletes to the boathouse. Occasionally, Judah is joined by one of our coaches' daughter, Cora |
Nelson |
|
Newfoundland Kingston Rowing Club |
The favorite part of Nelson's days is making it down to the boathouse. He will always patiently sit in the launch while watching over the rowers, or occasionally fall asleep during some of the longer sessions. |
| Pippin |
Fairmount Rowing Association |
Pippin is responsible for laying the lane lines on both the Schuylkill and Cooper Rivers. Our regattas depend on her. I believe Pippin is considered a member of Fairmount Rowing Association. |
Riley |
|
Sagamore Rowing Association |
Formerly of Saratoga Rowing Association (in Saratoga Springs,NY), Riley rides launches, works the starting line at the Long Island Championships, demonstrates great water safety with his life jacket, and helps out with our modified team! His greatest attribute is his herding instinct, which is great for the 7th and 8th grade land day; No modified athlete can run off to far without Riley bringing them back to the group. |
| Stevie Bones |
Atlanta Rowing Club |
Stevie Bones is a fixture at the both the Atlanta Rowing Club's and St. Andrew Rowing Club's boathouses in Atlanta, GA. During the week, he diligently attends all practices and serves as assistant coach to his mommy in the launch - always keeping a close eye on his boats and rowers. A firm believer in launch safety, he is easy to spot out on the Chattahoochee River between the hours of 4:30 PM and 7 PM sporting his bright green life vest. He has even been known to fill in the coxswain seat from time to time when needed. At regattas, not only is Stevie the team mascot, but he is there to lend a helping paw to launch and recover boats. Most importantly, he is there for moral support and to shower all rowers with love, kisses and affection (in return for a belly rub, of course). This past summer, Stevie was also the unofficial therapy dog at the USRowing Masters National Championships as rowers from all over the country stopped to hug Stevie in lieu of their own stay-at-home pup. Stevie could not be happier than when he is at the boathouse and regattas. He IS indeed the epitome of THE boathouse dog. |
Uncle Sam |
|
Orlando Area Rowing Society |
Uncle Sam was just 2 months old when he was given to me as a birthday present from some OARS rowers. He's been a regular at our boathouse ever since. From the moment we drive through the gate, he is ready for practice. From patrolling the boathouse grounds, jumping in the lake, and of course riding in the launch. He watches over every boat and loves every moment with the team! |
| Wolfgang |
Lake Oswego Community Rowing |
Wolfgang is a fixture here at Lake Oswego Community Rowing (LOCR). Wolfgang cut his teeth as a puppy at the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo NY. After relocating to the west coast, he found a new home in the Portland area at Lake Oswego Community Rowing (LOCR). He is diligent in keeping geese away from our docks. He enjoys barking at the sturgeon swimming around. His long body and tiny legs allows him to sneak in for kisses especially during stretching or when coach is expressing loud disapproval. He is a snuggle monster who tries to snuggle all mammals - including the family of beavers who live under our floating boathouse. He hopes to one day snuggle our resident sea lion. |
