Coaches Trick
The Gunwale Midpoint Notation

Even a little chalk will do the trick for a rigging session or two

Finally getting time to check, or fine-tune, the rigging on your crew's limo? When you get around to checking the spread, here's a handy hack that will save you time and the "math headache" that comes with using a tape measure: write the midpoint right on the gunwale.

We've used this time-tested trick ourselves, but intrepid Rowing Hack reader (and coach) Hans Doerr reminded us that it is a hack worth sharing. It is pretty simple, too: instead of dividing the width measurement from your tape measure at each seat, every time, just do the math once the first time you rig, and then write the midpoint number right on the gunwale. It will save you time and, as Coach Doerr points out, will cut down on your math errors--you know, the kind that have you putting the tape down in the wrong spot and then leave you scratching your head wondering why you never noticed the two man was 3 centimeters tighter than the rest of the boat.

We've seen grease pencils do the trick for this, and still be removable, or you can just get a paint pen or metallic Sharpie and make your cheat mark permanent. Since the midpoint number doesn't actually say anything about your actual spread measurement, even the most paranoid coaches can use this trick. At worst, anyone looking at your boat will know exactly how far the keel is from the gunwale at each seat, and nothing more.

If you really want to keep your boat pristine (or all your numbers secret), you can always jot the number on a piece of those perfect hacker helpers - electrical tape or duct tape, take your pick - and then remove it all together. That variation actually works really well with loaner boats you might wind up using at a regatta you travelled to sans boats; we find it best not to scribble all over rented equipment, no matter how clever the hack might be.

Have a trick that helps you rig quickly and get things right? Share your tips--and hacks--in the comments below.

We got this hack from a loyal reader. Do you have a great rowing hack to suggest for future inclusion here? Send it to us!

I like to use my long straight edge or a string stretched between the pins to find and put a hash mark at the mid-station/measuring point. Measuring from a point that is not in line with the pin can significantly alter the spread measurement. Once I am confident in my hash mark placement I use a dab of clear nail polish to keep it from wearing off.
