One year ago today I had surgery to remove a rib as a result of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. I’ve had people reach out to me asking how recovery has been. I figured an update was due. It’s been a long year of getting my mind and body back where I wanted them to be. Injuries are sometimes a part of rowing life. No matter what, they suck. I was so angry at myself/my body, feeling like it had failed me. As someone who had never had any sort of surgery before I was unprepared for the toll it would take. I have a newfound respect and admiration for any athlete that has surgery and gets back into training. It’s an unknown journey of discovering how to get your athleticism back to where it was and working towards the goal of being better than before. . This photo of the peeled banana is symbolic. After surgery the pain was so intense, I couldn’t finish peeling a banana without stopping in tears. (Dramatic but true??). I am happy to say that this is no longer the case. I could not be where I am today without the love of family, the care of PT and Doctors, and my teammates who have been a constant source of inspiration, encouragement, and motivation. I had to throw in some lifting clips to show that you don’t need a full rib cage to pursue your passions. Time to race! ??????????????? . ??photo credit: @emily.huelskamp ??????? video credit & amazing lifting partner: @mobruggie . #thorasicoutletsyndrome #ribremoval #oneyearlater #recovery #rowing @skratchlabs @worldrowingofficial
