Arlington-Belmont Crew brought enough athletes to field 13 different crews in the Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association's Fall State Championship Regatta on the Merrimack River in Lowell, Mass. Sunday.
Still, when the awards were announced and the trophies were being handed out, girl's captain Jess Daum wasn't expecting to hear her team's name being called to accept the Overall Points Trophy. "We came here just trying to make it through the regatta, and honestly, we were all sitting back there expecting to hear our name coming in second."
That was not the case. On what will be the sign-off regatta for the Lowell stretch of the Merrimack River this season, Arlington-Belmont scored two first place wins, along with seven second or third place finishes to earn the right to hold up the Overall Regatta Points Trophy. "It feels amazing," Daum said. "It took a lot of effort from every single person on this team to pull this through," she said.
"So many hours go into this trophy," added boy's team co-captain Joseph Wenzel. "It's amazing to really reflect how much this team of over one hundred people has put in. Each person has put in hundreds of hours themselves on the erg and on the water. It's very nice to be able to rely on each other and this is proof we can. I'm very happy we won this trophy."
Other trophies awarded included the Girl's Four Trophy, which went to Duxbury Bay Maritime School and the Boy's Four Trophy, awarded to Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. Hingham High School won the Girl's and Arlington-Belmont won the Boy's Eight Trophy. Worcester Public High School won the Sculling Trophy.
In all, 118 crews ranging from middle school and novice crews to first and second varsity crews raced on flat water and pleasant overcast conditions to wrap up the Massachusetts Public School Rowing Association's 2016 season.
"This is the first year we've had this regatta at Lowell, and everything went smoothly," said regatta official Andrew McLaughlin. "This was our fall championships, everyone came off the water happy and we're looking forward to get back at it when the spring comes around."
