The Navy varsity lightweights won their first light V8 championship ever (it looks like they shared the title with both MIT and Cornell in '62 in a three-way dead heat!) and averted a Harvard sweep of the 2004 Sprints; Navy took the light V8, and Harvard won every other race among the traditionally contested Sprints events: heavy 2V and 1F, and light 2V and 1F. In fact, Harvard took every heavy event save for the 2F8, which was won by Brown.
In the "lower boats" racing:
Lights:
2F8: Navy
3V8: Navy
3V4: Yale
2F4: Dartmouth
Heavy:
2F8: Brown
3V8: Harvard
4V: Harvard
in the heavy V8, Harvard had clear water by somewhere around the 1000, but the race for 2nd went all the way down the course, with Wisco, Navy, Northeastern, and eventual silver medalist Princeton all having a hold on second at some point in the race. Princeton and Navy notched away from the field only in the final 350-400 meters.
In the light V8, several crews, especially Harvard, shadowed Navy by two seats or less for nearly 1300 meters, but the Academy crew owned the last 500, opening up an eight seat lead. Georgetown took a shot at Harvard's second place spot, trailing by less than a foot with 15 strokes to go, with Princeton about a half length behind, but Harvard was able to push out for the silver.
Photo finish of the day came in the frosh light eight, with 0.71 seconds separating Navy in second from Penn in fourth, and only 0.17 separating Princeton in third from Penn, just out of the medals.
Random coxswain stats of the day: the princeton MFL8 cox carried 32.5 lbs., the Dartmouth 2VL8 cox carried 36.3 lbs.
