Event Highlights:
The early Easter Holiday has had an impact on the Crew Classic, which is traditionally the first week of April, which led to many collegiate crews scheduling dual meets for the last weekend in March. The Crew Classic have taken note and are publishing the schedule 3 years out so everyone can plan ahead for future regattas. However, the harsh winter back east had many crews looking for a little relief - or just time on the water without dodging ice flows - and we have the 2nd highest attendance just behind our 40th anniversary, with over 400 crews.
This year the premier women’s event the Jessop Whittier features USC (defending champs), University Texas, UCLA, British Columbia, Grand Valley, University of Victoria, and USD. On the Men’s side, in the Copley Cup, Cal (defending champs), UPenn, Drexel, Stanford, Navy, British Columbia, and Grand Valley round out the premier event.
Competition in the Cal Cups will be fierce new champions looking to climb the medals stand in both the men's and women's events.
Junior rowing has picked up the pace with the high school varsity races with the deepest fields at 21 and 22 crews respectively traveling from as far away as CT, NJ and TX. Don’t count out the west coast schools though, they have been dominant in this event the last several years.
Regatta Lore:
On this day 25 years ago, the Copley Cup had its only re-row when a protest by Wisconsin led to a re-row of the final. The initial race was won by Washington and the re-row was won by Harvard. Later the decision to conduct a re-row would be overturned and Washington would be awarded the victory. Wisco would eventually exact revenge on both by winning the National title. Harvard did have the distinction of winning Sprints that year and besting Wisco in-route to winning the Ladies Plate at Henley.
Fun Crew Classic Facts:
What does it take to run a two-day regatta with 4000+ competitors? About 1740 hours; this is why you need to be nice to your referees and the 100 volunteers that support them; 1740 hours is more than most people work all year. Here are some of the numbers the Crew Classic runs up come race day.
