Erging in Hawaii

Ed Hewitt

It's not often that rowing and surfing overlap -- unless you're from the Jersey shore, certain regions of Australia, and (sometimes) SoCal (or if you rowed in the 1999 Hawaiian Challenge, during which the Eddie also took place)  -- so it's a bit surprising to see two social media posts featuring rowing and big wave surfing in one day.

But that happened yesterday, and while the posts hardly display much affinity between the two water tribes, they're funny and worth a look anyway:

First, Matt Brown responds to a Men's Journal article featuring tips on rowing the erg from Laird Hamilton:

Then big wave surfer Mark Healey responds to his unhappiness that the Eddie was canceled yesterday with a dejected row on a (sort of) rowing machine:

The two activities do require some similar skill sets - stamina, power, a feel for the water - so hopefully once everyone is back in the water, it will be all aloha.
