The Cambridge May Bumps got underway yesterday, and as such the tally of Notes and Fines are published at the end of each day. The list varies in entertainment value each year, although it is often, well, "better" each day as the umpires and officials tire and as a result rely a bit more on wit than wisdom with each passing day - to our entertainment benefit.
This year's list of Wednesday fines kicks off with a very promising £85 fine for "Urinating in public" for Clare M2, and also includes this gem: "Emmanuel M1 - Forgot bung (no advantage) - £15 and excessive reminders for the rest of the week."
Anyone who has ever encountered the same refs on repeat occasions (and refs who encounter the same crews to boot) has to appreciate the candor involved in publicly announcing that an offending crew may be hectored and harangued for the remainder of a regatta (and beyond); umpires don't forget!
Well, at least until the massive Saturday night regatta and boat parties they don't. If even that long.
