We continue our journey to find more badass workouts to add to your winter regimen at Boston University's DeWolfe Boathouse – the Head of the Charles staring line. Claire Richer, a senior at BU shares her favorite workout to do on campus – and an alternative workout that gets her out of the gym, and into the woods.

row2k: What is your favorite winter workout?

Claire Richer: The first one that comes to mind is a workout on the treadmill that we call the "Texan." Why that name? I have no idea. [Note: row2k checked in with Coach Stacey Rippetoe on the etymology – she has no idea either. It was a favorite workout of hers from another coach.] It's an interval workout – usually a 30' aerobic jog warm up and then 10 intervals of 2' jog, 1' sprint with a cool down afterwards. The intervals add up to be 30', so it's at least an hour depending on how much cool down you want.

row2k: What about this workout makes it a favorite?

CR: I really like this workout because I always feel that I get something out of it. It gets hard, but you have enough time to recover without your heart rate dropping too much. After pushing myself on the erg so much, it's really nice to have a machine push me instead.  It's a satisfying workout.

row2k: Does your favorite workout change when you are home on break? What do you like/dislike about working out while at home?

CR: When I'm on winter break, I think cross-country skiing becomes the new favorite.

The weight room at home drives me nuts. All of the guys are on their phones or just hanging out with their buddies. I just want to lift and get out and do other stuff. They just sit there and dawdle on the bench press finding the best possible song for each rep.

row2k: If you could stay fit during the winter by only doing one type of non-erg cross training, what would it be and why?

CR: Cross-Country Skiing  (skating more than classic - you go faster). My mom loves to XC ski, and she put me on my first pair of skis right after I learned to walk. I've always loved being in the woods in wintertime. Snowy woods are really something out of a dream, especially when a hare or ferret darts across your path. You also get a really good workout going up hills and you don't want to stop for too long, or else you get cold; that's always a motivator for me!
