Time standards were implemented in 1995-96 to assist participants in determining competitiveness for national team programs. Athletes do not have to meet minimum standards to submit scores, however, should recognize these standards are meant to be challenging and internationally competitive. Standards provide a goal to work towards; realizing it takes dedication, commitment and hard work to reach new levels. Attainment of these standards does not guarantee invitation to participate in programs. After a four-year evaluation of time standards, the men's standards have undergone further adjustments to reflect Olympic requirements. Women's standards remain consistent, as do junior times for the current year. Since 1991, testing scores have been evaluated and time standards adjusted in each category as a result of national team coaches, training programs and training center concepts.
