INDIANAPOLIS - The United States came away from the Pacific Rim International Regatta, the Olympic rowing test event in Sydney, Australia, with three medals on Friday. The women's pair and women's eight took gold while the women's double sculls claimed the silver.
The women's pair of Sally Scovel (Fountain City, Calif.) and Lianne Nelson (Seattle, Wash.) stroked a 7:30.28 over the Olympic course to defeated the Canadian pair by 11.44 seconds. It was an excellent showing for the Americans as they finished seventh at the recent 1999 FISA World Rowing Championships.
The women's eight also improved upon their world championship performance by moving up from a silver medal to capture the gold in Sydney. Coxed by Raj Shah (Malden Bridge, N.Y.), the crew of Katie Maloney (Seattle, Wash.), Linda Miller (Alexandria, Va.), Torrey Folk (Columbia, Mo.), Amy Fuller (Westlake Village, Calif.), Sarah Jones (Stanwood, Wash.), Betsy McCagg (Seatlle, Wash.), Amy Martin (Kent, Ore.), and Wendy Wilbur (East Bridgewater, Mass.) stroked a 6:20.00. They defeated the silver-medal crew from Australia by 21.69 seconds and the bronze medalists from New Zealand by 30.88 seconds.
In the women's double sculls, Hilary Gehman (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Kelly Salchow (Cincinnati, Ohio) just missed the gold medal by 0.43 seconds, finishing in 7:12.04 compared to the first place Russian time of 7:11.61.
The American men's double sculls tandem of Ian McGowan (Snohomish, Wash.) and Nick Peterson (Alexandria, Va.) finished fourth in the final stroking a 6:30.72. The Italian duo took gold in the event with a time of 6:26.16.
Competing in the B Final for places 7-12, the second U.S. men's double duo of Matt Madigan (Loyalton, Calif.) and Mike Ferry (Princeton, N.J.) won the event with a time of 6:38.81 claiming seventh overall. They defeated silver medalist France by 1.77 seconds and the bronze medalists from New Zealand by 5.73 seconds.
The Pacific Rim International was the rowing test event for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. It was an opportunity for crews to experience the rowing venue as well as a chance for the organizing committee to test the venue, personnel, and importantly the Games timing and scoring system.
