USRowing Crowns National Champions in 12 Events

INDIANAPOLIS - USRowing crowned 12 national champions Sunday at the 1999 USRowing National Championship Regatta at Eagle Creek Park.

Crews from USRowing's women's national team training camp at the ARCO Olympic Training Center dominated the second day of finals, winning seven of the 12 events. In the women's four, ARCO Training Center took the top three spots. The crew of Linda Miller, Amy Martin, Katie Maloney, and Wendy Wilbur won the national title in a time of 6:51.8.

In the women's lightweight four, ARCO's "B" entry of Mary Obidinski, Julie McCleery, Bethany Grant, and Stacey Borgman stroked a 7:05.21 to win the national title. ARCO's "A" boat finished second in a time of 7:15.7, while Argonaut Rowing Club placed third.

ARCO also swept the women's open and lightweight quadruple sculls. The crew of Monica Michini, Sarah Jones, Amy Fuller and Leslie Rawley defeated the crew from USRowing's Augusta Training Center by 8.1 seconds. The ARCO quad clocked a 6:43.1 to claim the national title. In the women's lightweight quad, ARCO's "A" entry of Molly Brock, Sara Den Besten, Angie Cummins, and Sherri Kiklas rowed to a first-place finish in a time of 6:39.0.

ARCO dominated the women's open and lightweight eight events as well. In the women's eight, ARCO's "B" entry of Lianne Nelson, Sally Scovel, Amy Fuller, Torrey Folk, Wendy Wilbur, Katie Maloney, Sarah Jones, Amy Martin, and coxswain Elysia Digert defeated ARCO's "A" entry by 3.2 seconds. In the women's lightweight eight, ARCO finished in a time of 6:37.3, 11.2-seconds ahead of Don Rowing Club.

ARCO's final first-place finish came from Linda Miller in the women's single sculls 500-meter dash. Miller and Canada's Jen Browett both clocked a 1:54.2 to tie for first place. Miller won the national title outright as the top U.S. finisher.

In other races, New York Athletic Club's men's eight pulled away from Penn Athletic Club in the final strokes to claim the national championship. Argentina's eight finished in first with a time of a 5:45.1, while NYAC finished 0.3 seconds behind.

Ridley Grad's men's quadruple sculls rowed through the Undine crew in the last 200 meters to win the race. However, Undine's crew of Doug Brown, Dave Loeckner, Grant Nichols, and Jim Smigiel finished as the top U.S. crew and claimed the first title of the day in a time of 6:24.4. Ridley Grad stroked a 6:18.5 to win the event, while Michigan Rowing Club finished third.

In the men's single scull 500-meter dash, Austin Rowing Club's John Cullicott claimed the title, stroking a 1:38.6. Jamie Gordon finished second, while Bob Borborg finished third.

In the men's four final, Argentina rowed into first place. However, Penn AC's "A" entry claimed the national title, stroking a 6:19.2. Penn AC's "B" crew rowed into third, clocking a 6:23.0.

Argentina also won the men's lightweight quad, defeating the Canadian quad that will be competing in the Pan American Games in July. Undine Boat Club finished third and claimed the national title with a time of 6:10.5.
