USRowing National Championships in Full Swing after Heats

INDIANAPOLIS - USRowing crowned 17 national champions Saturday at the 1999 USRowing National Championship Regatta at Eagle Creek Park.

In the day's closest race, 1996 Olympic silver medalists Missy Ryan and Karen Kraft battled Lianne Nelson and Sally Scovel from ARCO Olympic Training Center for the national championship in the women's pair. Ryan, a native of Bloomington, Ind., and Kraft passed Nelson and Scovel in the final 10 strokes, claiming the title in a time of 7:36.3. The ARCO crew stroked a 7:36.5 to earn the silver medal.

The day started with Penn AC's men's four with coxswain claiming the first title of the championships in a time of 6:39.2. New York Athletic Club stroked a 6:42.6 to finish second, while the Wisconsin Development Camp finished third.

In the men's double sculls, Undine Rowing Club's Jim Smigiel and Grant Nichlos stroked a 6:48.2, defeating the second-place crew by 6.1 seconds. Dan DeBonis and Will Fisher (New York Athletic Club) finished second, while the crew from Minneapolis Rowing Club finished third.

Drew Scobie and Doug Vandor from St. Catharines won the men's lightweight pair, stroking a 7:07.2 to finish six seconds ahead of the Chilean crew. Tim Baer and Rob Milan from New York Athletic Club finished third but claimed the national title as the top U.S. finisher.

In the women's single sculls, the top three scullers from ARCO Olympic Training Center battled one another for the national title. Leslie Rawley, who will represent the U.S. in the event at the world championships in August, was victorious with a time of 8:12.8. Monica Michini finished second in a time of 8:18.5, while Sarah Jones finished third.

After a week of finishing second to Bill Belden at the Pan American Games Trials, James Martinez, a five-time national team member, defeated the Union Boat Club sculler in the men's lightweight single. Martinez won the event in a time of 7:33.9. Earlier in the week, Belden defeated Martinez for a spot on the Pan American Games team.

Taking the national title in the women's lightweight double was ARCO's "B" duo of Sherri Kiklas and Sara Den Besten, stroking a 7:40.1. ARCO's tandem of Linda Muri and Rachel Anderson won the title in the women's lightweight pair, clocking an 8:17.2.

The crews from ARCO dominated the women's four final, taking the top four spots. Winning the national title with a time of 7:12.3 were Amy Fuller, Torrey Folk, Linda Miller, Katie Maloney and coxswain Bre Hart. ARCO also took the top spot in the women's double sculls. Monica Michini and Leslie Rawley stroked a 7:48.7 to defeat two crews from the Augusta Training Center.

In the men's lightweight four, Riverside Boat Club took the national title with a time of 7:08.0, leaving Vesper in second and NYAC in third.

Argentina's M.J. Garisoain, bronze medalist in the event at the 1998 World Championships, finished first in the women's lightweight single with a time of 8:43.1. Finishing second and winning the national title was Stacy Borgman from ARCO.

In the men's open single sculls Argentina's "A" sculler finished first in the final with a time of 7:41.3. John Cullicott finished third, winning the national title.

Argentina dominated the men's pair final. Argentina swept the top three spots with Damian Ordas and Walter Balunek winning the race in a time of 7:17.8. Penn AC's Curt Browder and Dixon Gillis finished fourth and claimed the national title.

Argentina's duo of Massa and Leinhard won the men's lightweight double sculls with a time of 7:04.2. James Martinez and Cooper Wessells finished second, winning the national championship. For Martinez, it was his second title of the day.

Battling for the title in the women's lightweight four, ARCO's "A" crew out-stroked ARCO's "B" crew by 5.2 seconds to win the title.

The 1999 USRowing National Championships conclude Sunday. Finals in 12 events begin at 10 a.m.
