USRowing National Championships in Full Swing after Heats

By Amy Westenfeld INDIANAPOLIS - The 1999 USRowing National Championship Regatta began Friday at Eagle Creek Park with some of the top national and international crews competing for titles in 29 events. Headlining the event and competing in the women's pair, the top-seeded duo of Missy Schwen Ryan and Karen Kraft won its heat in a time of 7:22.8 to advance directly to Saturday's final. Ryan, a Bloomington, Ind. native, and Kraft row out of the Dallas Rowing Club. National Team members Sally Scovel and Lianne Nelson also advanced to the final by winning the first heat in a time of 7:28.6. Competing in the men's lightweight single sculls, Pan American Games team member Bill Belden finished first in his heat, stroking a 7:20.8. In the second heat of the men's lightweight single, No. 2 seed and five-time national team member James Martinez won with a time of 7:09.8. Martinez also competed in the men's lightweight double sculls with Cooper Wessells. Both Belden and Martinez advanced to tomorrow's semifinals in the men's lightweight single. ARCO Training Center's Julie McCleery and Mary Obidinski, the top-seeded women's lightweight double, won their race by a length and a half of open water, stroking a 7:16.9. Obidinski earned a spot on the 1999 Pan American Team earlier this week. The duo will head to the semifinals on Saturday. Obidinski also finished first in her heat of the women's lightweight single sculls, stroking an 8:02.9. Molly Brock, Obidinski's partner for the upcoming 1999 Pan American Games, placed second in her heat of the lightweight single, stroking an 8:10.5. Argentina's M.J. Garisoain, bronze medalist in the event at the 1998 World Championships, won her heat in a time of 7:59.9. In the men's open single sculls, top seed Nick McQuaid, from USRowing's Augusta Training Center, dominated his heat, finishing with a time of 7:26.8. He will compete tomorrow in the semifinals. McQuaid also competed in the men's double sculls, placing second in his heat and first in the repechage. In the women's single sculls, the ARCO Olympic Training Center swept the top spot in the three heats. Leslie Rawley, Monica Michini, and Sarah Jones won their heats and advanced to Saturday morning's semifinals. The 1999 USRowing National Championships continue Saturday. Finals in 17 events begin at 10 a.m. Finals in the remaining 12 events begin Sunday at 10 a.m.
