INDIANAPOLIS - USRowing will unveil a new program of education for all member coaches at the 1999 USRowing Annual Convention in Philadelphia, Pa., December 10-12. The curriculum will be based upon the coaching education model endoresed by the United States Olympic Committee and facilitated by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).In its essence, USRowing's revamped coaching education program outlines the competencies that rowing coaches should know and be able to perform while providing the proper foundation for a safe and successful team. There are currently two levels of coaching certification, both of which will be introduced at convention. Levels III, IV, and V will be introduced beginning in the new millennium.
The introductory certification (Level I) will represent a minimum entry-level qualification for any individual coaching rowing. The foundation level certification (Level II) will be the next level of expertise for those coaches with at least one year of experience. These two levels of certification feature strong emphasis on injury prevention, risk management, athlete growth, training and conditioning, skills and tactics, teaching, professional preparation, equipment, and social aspects.
The Coaching Education Program will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday of convention. Sessions will be conducted by such noted experts as Gavin White, Bebe Bryans, Mike Davenport, and Allen Rosenberg. Registration information and a complete schedule of sessions can be found at www.usrowing.org or by calling USRowing member services at (800) 314-4769.
